NFTS graduates become highly successful film and television programme makers and many make important contributions to film and programme-making practice in their respective fields. Some will find fresh and imaginative ways to tell stories. Others will go on to instigate innovative formats, while yet others will develop new ways to apply the technology.
To set them on that path, all our courses are intensely practical. Little time is spent in conventional seminar rooms. Theory is put directly into practice in the studios and workshops, so that students learn by applying their developing knowledge in real filmmaking situations. Our courses develop each student's creative and intellectual potential, encouraging them to push the boundaries and come up with new perceptions and innovative work.

Design for Film and Television
Because our students vary widely in background and experience, they undertake a short Foundation Programme shortly before the MA course starts. This first stage ensures that everyone embarks on the MA with broadly similar knowledge and technical skills.
The MA courses are based on learning and applying the crafts and skills of the medium. Collaboration is emphasised so that students develop a sound understanding of how their specialist role fits into the production process. Practical work is integrated with screenings and discussions that place learning in its craft and creative context. The Screen Arts programme - a systematic survey of screen history, culture and aesthetics delivered through seminars and screenings - is an integral part of the MA course. Students also undertake a dissertation or research project. While most students choose a topic related to their specialisation, subjects that attempt to draw connections with the filmmaking process as a whole are also encouraged.
Diploma Courses
Our Diploma courses vary in length from 12 to 18 months. Courses are offered in:
Editing
(Television Entertainment)
Production Management
Script Development
Sound
Recording for Film and Television
All Diploma courses follow a strongly practice-oriented curriculum that combines technical and theoretical study with production. Attendance at the Screen Arts programme is encouraged, though is not compulsory.
